Forged by Fire: The Story of Castries

Saint Lucia’s history has been shaped not only by hurricanes and war — but by fire.

In 1796, Castries was burned during colonial conflict.
Again in 1805… and once more on April 6th, 1813, the capital was nearly wiped out.

On May 14th and 15th, 1927, another devastating blaze destroyed key government buildings.

That day, a small fire quickly spread through the tightly packed wooden buildings of the capital. Fueled by wind, the flames tore across the city in just hours.

Homes, businesses, and historic landmarks were destroyed — including the beloved Carnegie Library, a proud symbol of education and culture.

When the smoke cleared, much of Castries lay in ashes. Thousands were left homeless.
Yet from that devastation came rebuilding.
Modern Castries rose from the ruins — a powerful testament to Saint Lucia’s resilience.
